What is Mindful Running?

Mindfulness & Meditation on the Move for when you can’t sit still.

Do you feel tired all the time, stressed from work deadlines and overwhelmed overall? Or maybe you feel you simply need some space to breathe and clear your head.

If you do, chances are you have tried meditating. But, you couldn’t really sit still. Your mind was still racing following a body itching to move.

If this is you, Mindful Running might be the solution you have been searching for!

What is Mindful Running?

Mindful running is a form of exercise that involves combining the physical act of running with mindfulness techniques, such as focusing on your breath, body, and surroundings, and bringing a non-judgmental, present-moment awareness to your experience.

The goal of mindful running is to help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations as you run, rather than getting lost in your thoughts or letting your mind wander.

This can help you to stay more focused and present during your run which has the potential of improving your performance. Above all, it may help you reduce stress and anxiety, improve your overall sense of well-being and enjoy your run more. A 2016 study found that combining mindfulness and running can even decrease depression symptoms by 40%. Some people find that mindful running can also help them to become more attuned to their bodies, which may help them to run more efficiently and reduce their risk of injury.

How do you Run Mindfully?

Common ways to practise mindful running include:

  1. Paying attention to your breathing: focusing on the sensation of the air moving in and out of your body as you run.

  2. Noticing your surroundings: Taking in the sights, sounds, and smells around you as you run.

  3. Observing your body: Noticing how your body feels as you run, including any tension or discomfort.

  4. Accepting your thoughts and feelings: Don't try to push away any negative thoughts or feelings that come up, but rather acknowledge them and let them pass.

Easy, right? Well, for some people running is a natural way to destress, but for others, the mind still won’t stop. Add all the questions about running itself: “what should I do today?”, “am I running at the right pace?”, etc.
